Kealia Beach, Kauai

Kealia Beach (pronounced kay-a-lee-a) is just north of the town of Kapa'a along highway 56 between mile markers 8 and 9. The beach is a broad crescent shape, over half a mile long and 150 feet wide with rocky outcroppings at each end. Parking is just off the highway and runs nearly the length of the beach so it is very easy to get to. A bike path runs south along the coast from Kealia to Kapa'a and many of those pedaling along are carrying surf boards to and from Kealia.

Kealia Beach, Kauai

Kealia Beach is popular for surfing and boogie boarding because there are almost always waves. When the surf is calm, a sandy bottom makes it good for swimming and wading behind the seawall on the north end, but not good for snorkeling because sandy bottoms don't make good fish habitat. Be warned there are strong currents and rip tides here especially when there is big surf. It's best to ask the lifeguard about conditions before getting in the water. Besides surfing and boogie boarding, the beach is also good place for kite flying, jogging, beach volley ball, picnics, and bonfires. A ready supply of driftwood is usually available to burn on the south end of the beach, particularly after storms.
