Blackpot Beach (Black Pot Beach) is the section of Hanalei Bay between the mouth of Hanalei River and Hanalei Pier. The west-facing beach provides wonderful sunset views across the bay towards Mount Makana, the famous triangular landmark also known as "Bali Hai." The park has restrooms, showers, and picnic tables but no lifeguard station. A small boat launch is located behind the park and a couple of commercial operators use this location for boat and kayak tours. The park is often used to stage events such as community fairs and triathlons. Blackpot or Black Pot takes its name from a large iron cooking pot once located in the park and used to cook meals for community events and gatherings. Black Pot Beach was an important location for the 1958 movie South Pacific and the movie's opening scenes were filmed here. South Pacific played a significant role in calling attention to Kauai's beautiful north shore and perhaps started its tourist industry. Mount Makana is still today called "Bali Hai" because of the movie. Of course many other north shore locations were used to make the movie, including Lumahai Beach. Blackpot Beach has always been a popular hangout and an informal community hub - probably for as long as people have occupied Kauai. This is still true today. Starting after work, locals start gathering here and parking dozens of vehicles side-by-side along the beach to watch the surf, visit, and participate in a nightly tailgate party that continues until after sunset. Beach fires and barbecues are the norm. These aren't loud or unruly gatherings, but perhaps they are just a little too popular. Not everyone is happy about all the cars parked on the beach and the park is showing signs of overuse. The restrooms are in very poor condition and improvements badly needed. Hanalei community is taking steps to improve and expand the facilities at Blackpot. The pier has recently undergone a renovation that replaced the covered structure - an effort financed mostly by donations. Several adjoining parcels of land have recently been acquired which will be used to expand Blackpot Beach along the river. (article) Controversial Development: Plans for a massive private development just across the river in Princeville and on the site of an ancient fishpond could change Blackpot forever. The plans include a string of homes running along the ridge just across from the park and beach. Understandably, there is a lot opposition to this - not just because of the impact it will have on Black Pot, but because it will be seen along the bay and from many parts of Hanalei Valley. People are afraid they'll lose the natural beauty and character of the area. If built it will be a big change for Black Pot Beach. (more information ).
