You can barbecue your "catch of the day" in one of the well maintained grills near the pools.

Island activities: For the shoppers there are some very nice boutiques in the Poipu Village shopping center just West on Poipu Road. The Kukui'ula Village is also a wonderful place to shop. Food shopping is nearby at the Big Save supermarket in Koloa, just a couple of miles up the bypass road. If you are energetic and want some exercise Kauai offers a great series of hikes and drives, some with breathtaking views. Try the hike along the beach and cliffs east past the Hyatt. It is about 4 miles and the reward is a wonderful white sand beach. There is a spectacular hike/drive up the Waimea Canyon (the grand canyon of the Pacific). At the end of the road enjoy a jaw dropping lookout over the Na Pali Coast. Also refer to the Kauai Guide Book located in the house for more fun things to do.
Kauai Beaches: Poipu Kai resort fronts on two well known beaches... Shipwreck Beach and Brennecke Beach, each an excellent bodysurfing beach. Next to Brennecke beach is Poipu Beach Park, rated the best beach in North America for four years running. It features a sheltered "baby beach" for toddlers and parents, and a great snorkeling and swimming beach with every variety of tropical fish usually only seen in aquariums. Surfing is also an excellent option at Poipu Beach with a surf shop and board rentals just across the street from the beach.
Kauai Golfing: There are two championship 18-hole courses available near the resort: The Kiahuana Golf Course and the prestigious Poipu Bay Resort Course. Guests need to arrange with the individual courses for tee times. Within driving distance are several other courses in Princeville, Kalaheo, and Kapa'a.
Kauai Restaurants: There are many restaurants in Poipu. Here are some of our favorites: Dondero's at the Hyatt: a real classy restaurant with the best meals around. Brennecke's at the Beach, great for lunch and dinner overlooking Poipu beach. It is just across the street from the beach. Juliana and I can personally recommend the Plantation Gardens Restaurant here in Poipu. Good food and nice ambiance. Another great restaurant nearby at the Hyatt is Tidepools, known for its delightful fish entrees,
There are many others that people have enjoyed, such as: Keoki's Paradise, a fun place with live music and good food. Merrimans, and Tortilla Republic in the Kukui'ula Village, just down the road. And don't worry, Starbucks is only a half mile away, in the Poipu Village shopping center. The only event you would need to reserve far in advance is perhaps one of the Luaus, either at Smith's Tropical Paradise, or at the Kilohana Plantation, or also at the Hyatt on Thursdays and Sundays.
Kauai Restaurants: Brennecke's restaurant is a great place for lunch or dinner at the beach; good burgers, fish and drinks. They have a great crab meal for dinner. Don't forget Lapperts' ice cream for a real treat. It's fresh made in Hanapepe and definitely a landmark destination. They are located throughout the island: Hanapepe, Koloa (just a couple of miles from the house), Kapaa, Princeville, Hanalei Bay, etc.
When you want to get dressed up and go to a really nice restaurant there are three to choose from at the Hyatt resort next door that are definitely world class. It's just East down Poipu Rd. from the condo. Incidentally getting dressed up in Kauai for a guy entails a nice pair of shorts and a breezy Hawaiian shirt and sandals. The ladies usually wear something slinky and cool with heels. Get her a nice lei for the occasion (Star Market or in Koloa at the Big Save). We really enjoy the Hyatt's Ilima Terrace restaurant (especially Sunday brunch), but there are two others just as nice: Dondero's (fine Italian food), and Tide Pools (Seafood). They also have a wonderful island Luau once a week complete with Hawaiian entertainment. After dinner take a slow stroll around the grounds. The Hyatt continually gets awards for the beauty of its resort. Check out the torch lighting ceremony and the Hula show at the Seaview Terrace evenings around 6:00. The ladies may want to take advantage of the Anara Spa. It's open to the public and they offer wonderful massages, facials, exercise classes, etc.
Hi Jim and Juliana,
I wanted to thank you once again. Our stay was nothing short of fabulous. Our children were thrilled with all of our activities. I am truly in love with "your" Island. I met some of my friends that live there. We drove out to Waimea Canyon and Polihale Beach. We drove all the way up to Ke'e beach. I was able to hike a little of the Na Pali Coast. Swimming in the Reefs with the kids was the best. We cannot say enough about our trip.
The Condo was very nice, clean, and located centrally. I liked the fact that it was not air conditioned. The breeze feels much better.
We hope to return soon. All seven of us were very comfortable and relaxed. I will recommend your place to anyone who ever goes that way. I will contact you when we are able to return hopefully in the near future!
Aloha Jim and Juliana,
Just wanted to thank you for the use of your condo. It's a wonderful condo with lots of space and we enjoyed it very much. Kauai is a beautiful island and the roosters everywhere just cracked us up. We were definitely not excited to come home to snow. Can you believe it? Even in Alaska snow in October is definitely not normal. Some of the things we really enjoyed besides the beautiful beaches were: The Waimea Canyon, the mountain tubing down irrigation channels, the lighthouse at Kilauea (Probably not spelled right), some fantastic sunsets, we had a fantastic dinner at Gaylords and we even stopped at the beautiful animal shelter and walked dogs one afternoon.
So, thanks again for providing a wonderful place to stay.
Mr. and Mrs. Cherry,
We just returned from our Kauai vacation, and we must once again thank you for your beautiful condo. My wife and kids loved the proximity to the beach. I appreciated that everything we needed during our vacation was nearby.
We loved Kauai and are planning to return, if not next summer then in about
18 months. We will be sure to once again ask to use your great condo.
Hello Jim and Juliana,
I just wanted to send a quick message to thank you for the wonderful accommodations your home provided for my family during our vacation. Everything was so beautiful, comfortable and welcoming. I made notes of some of the decor, especially in the master bedroom, so that I can have some great ideas when decorating my bedroom (my next big project). Your thoughtfulness in providing even the smallest items throughout the home made sure we did not want for anything. Once we went to Costco and the grocery store, we were set.
I've never been to Kauai before; however, it is now my favorite island. We drove up into the Waimea canyon, kayaked the Wailua River, explored the north shores and relaxed on the beaches. My son and brother also enjoyed a few of the beautiful golf courses.
Thank you again for providing us the opportunity to enjoy an incredible vacation. Not only will I recommend your home to anyone heading to Kauai, but I'm sure we'll be back in the future.
