Ala Muku…Hawaiian for “rainbow fragment” … is a slice of paradise which offers you and your family and friends a relaxed, comfortable home base to enjoy and explore the beauty, activities and natural wonders of Kauai. Located at the end of a cul-de-sac in a quiet residential neighborhood, this home is about a half mile to Poipu Beach Park and Brennecke Beach.
Surrounded by lush tropical foliage, Ala Muku is a beautifully appointed 2,500 sq. ft. home with festive island décor to enhance your stay in paradise. Relax and socialize in the many indoor and outdoor spaces. On the western front porch the palm fronds rustle in the gentle breeze of the Pacific trade winds. The plush sofas in the living room invite a nap or an opportunity to be entertained with music, cable TV, or DVD/VHS.
All your culinary needs can be met in the cook’s kitchen with its abundant counter space, up-to-date appliances and utensils. The dining room with atrium–like ambiance seats 10 people with additional dining for 4 in the kitchen nook. The back patio, shaded by the red-blooming Royal Poinciana with orchids blooming at its base, is a lovely spot for lounging and BBQing. The garden setting is private, peaceful and exotic.

Pack up the beach equipment including mats, chairs, cooler, sand toys and have a great day at the beach. Poipu Beach Park offers a large grassy area dotted with swaying coco palms. There are picnic tables, play equipment, showers, restrooms, even a convenience store and restaurant across the street.
Poipu Beach offers a sheltered cove called “Baby Beach” where toddlers play in the sand and splash in the shallow waters. A few steps away in the clear warm water, colorful tropical fish swim beneath as you snorkel just feet from the shore. The calm waters and gentle waves are enjoyed by swimmers of all capabilities. Experienced surfers can catch large-breaking waves further out beyond the reef. Brennecke Beach, at the east end of the park, is renowned for body surfing and boogie boarding.
If you bring your camera you may be able to capture on film a Monk Seal sleeping off a meal on the beach. Seals are protected so don't approach too closely.
Within a 2 mile radius of the house you will find two golf courses, some of Kauai’s finest restaurants and charming island boutiques. When you venture beyond Poipu you will find a virtual paradise of activities: helicopter tours, horseback riding, river and ocean kayaking, whale-watching, botanical garden tours and much more, including many popular natural attractions such as the Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of the Pacific).
Island activities: For the shoppers there are some very nice boutiques in the Poipu Village shopping center just West on Poipu Road. The Kukui'ula Village is also a wonderful place to shop. Food shopping is nearby at the Big Save supermarket in Koloa, just a couple of miles up the bypass road. If you are energetic and want some exercise Kauai offers a great series of hikes and drives, some with breathtaking views. Try the hike along the beach and cliffs east past the Hyatt. It is about 4 miles and the reward is a wonderful white sand beach. There is a spectacular hike/drive up the Waimea Canyon (the grand canyon of the Pacific). At the end of the road enjoy a jaw dropping lookout over the Na Pali Coast. Also refer to the Kauai Guide Book located in the house for more fun things to do.
Kauai Beaches: Poipu Kai resort fronts on two well known beaches... Shipwreck Beach and Brennecke Beach, each an excellent bodysurfing beach. Next to Brennecke beach is Poipu Beach Park, rated the best beach in North America for four years running. It features a sheltered "baby beach" for toddlers and parents, and a great snorkeling and swimming beach with every variety of tropical fish usually only seen in aquariums. Surfing is also an excellent option at Poipu Beach with a surf shop and board rentals just across the street from the beach.
Kauai Golfing: There are two championship 18-hole courses available near the resort: The Kiahuana Golf Course and the prestigious Poipu Bay Resort Course. Guests need to arrange with the individual courses for tee times. Within driving distance are several other courses in Princeville, Kalaheo, and Kapa'a.
Kauai Restaurants: There are many restaurants in Poipu. Here are some of our favorites: Dondero's at the Hyatt: a real classy restaurant with the best meals around. Brennecke's at the Beach, great for lunch and dinner overlooking Poipu beach. It is just across the street from the beach. Juliana and I can personally recommend the Plantation Gardens Restaurant here in Poipu. Good food and nice ambiance. Another great restaurant nearby at the Hyatt is Tidepools, known for its delightful fish entrees,
There are many others that people have enjoyed, such as: Keoki's Paradise, a fun place with live music and good food. Merrimans, and Tortilla Republic in the Kukui'ula Village, just down the road. And don't worry, Starbucks is only a half mile away, in the Poipu Village shopping center. The only event you would need to reserve far in advance is perhaps one of the Luaus, either at Smith's Tropical Paradise, or at the Kilohana Plantation, or also at the Hyatt on Thursdays and Sundays.
Kauai Restaurants: Brennecke's restaurant is a great place for lunch or dinner at the beach; good burgers, fish and drinks. They have a great crab meal for dinner. Don't forget Lapperts' ice cream for a real treat. It's fresh made in Hanapepe and definitely a landmark destination. They are located throughout the island: Hanapepe, Koloa (just a couple of miles from the house), Kapaa, Princeville, Hanalei Bay, etc.
"Thank you very much for your hospitality. We enjoyed your home immensely. It was nice to have the decks of cards, the games, and the books. We will definitely recommend your home to our friends."
"Dear Jim and Juliana,
We are still riding the wave of Aloha from our dream trip to Kauai! We wanted to thank you for letting us stay at Ala Muku for our vacation. What an island find! You have thought of every last detail, from kitchen goodies to surf toys, how thoughtful you were in outfitting this vacation home! We had a wonderful stay, and enjoyed every minute of it!...
We hope to return to Ala Muku someday, as we fully intend for your incredible island to be a "regular"
family vacation for us!
Again, thank you for your hospitality, and the use of your wonderful vacation hale!
Sincerely, The McBride 5"
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Coming back from vacation is always eventful. My family enjoyed our trip to Kauai and especially your home. You and your wife did a great job of decorating the place. It felt like home. I especially enjoyed the two comfortable couches in the living room. They were great for that early morning reading. The gas barbeque was a nice feature as we grilled up fresh ahi one night. In addition your caretaker is a very nice lady, although I have to admit we did not see much of her as we seemed to be at one of the many beaches almost every day. The week there reminded me why Kauai is my favorite island.
I have forwarded to four individuals your web site link as they are interested in going to Kauai in the next year."
"At least the jet lag has now gone and we are only left with the idyllic memories of the most perfect holiday. Everything you said about Kauai was true plus more. What a fantastic place, we would certainly have spent much longer there if only we could. Now we know of it's beauty and splendour and imagine the delights we may have missed, we will always dream of one day coming back. As far as the house was concerned it was perfect for our family gathering... Anyway, we all had the most perfect time and our kids are now officially spoilt and will nag me for the rest of our lives to go back. We cannot thank you enough for giving us the opportunity to enjoy your hale."
